Find the Best Family Retreats 2022

Just because you have a beautiful and busy family does not mean that you don’t deserve a fabulous vacation.

Um, hello mama yogi, we see you.

Instead of stressing about your next family vacation (we’ve been there, ugh) or burdening yourself with guilt about taking off for your own vacation, why not do it all together?

Give yourself some quality beach time and uninterrupted yoga classes.

Give your kids a memorable vacation that also shows them the importance of self-care.

And do it all for pretty cheap prices.

Not sure where to start?

Well, let us show you what we’ve noticed in other families and you can see what fits yours.

Popular Destinations for Family Holidays

Do more with your kids this year than pay a registration fee and sign a permission slip. This time, go with them! There are so many reasons to jump in on the action, whether it's the destination, the activities, or just the fact that you are totally in love with your children.

Don't worry, we get it. Families rock.

Unfortunately, Western societal practices limit our time with them :( That's why family retreats are becoming increasingly popular each year.

You know what else is cool?

Lots of the retreats centers are catching on to the yoga retreat trend and offering a lot of the same amenities and activities that we (yogis) all know and love. So a lot of these family retreats are actually pretty swanky, giving parents an exciting glimpse of luxury while the kids have an absolute blast doing one of the many available activities!

It's a win, all around.

Check out some of these popular destinations:

Family Vacations in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is the perfect place for a family vacation. The chill vibes and barefoot culture make it the perfect place to let your children explore. There are plenty of outdoor activities for everyone to enjoy and even more ways to simply relax. The jungles offer exciting new animals and plants, while the beaches have an endless supply of coconuts. The retreat centers know that this is a family destination and so will have the perfect setup for you and your family.

Family Retreats in Europe

Looking for a way to haul your family over to Europe without pulling your hair out? Let the retreat centers do all the hard work for you so that you can truly vacation on your vacation. Head to Spain for some warm beach retreats, or Portugal for surf and yoga for the whole family. France offers pure beauty in tranquil countryside and Croatia gives you more bang for your buck with cheap family retreats.

Family Getaway in Canada

Canada is refreshingly simple in that the people are kind and happy, the amenities are first world status, yet nature still rules the land. It’s a popular destination for families looking for some space and fresh air. Head to British Columbia for some of the best views you will find in all of the world (okay, maybe that’s a bit biased, but you get the idea). Or head to Toronto for an amazing fusion of cultures and big city entertainment.

Top Family Vacation Program Types

If you are looking for a specific type of family holiday, then you may not be as focused on the destination. There are so many quality programs to choose from. Some of them may offer the yoga retreat vibe the parents are seeking (totally get it) with child programs to keep the kids happy and entertained. Others may focus on family ministry, with workshops and lessons on the Holy Spirit, God, and Christian marriage counseling. Others still may simply provide a retreat center for your overdue family reunion.

Whatever the case may be, we are certain that you will find something awesome for all family members.

Retreats With Childcare

If your children are on the younger side then you may be looking for a retreat center with childcare. Though not all retreat centers offer childcare, they may know of daycare centers or programs that will occupy your children while you hit the mat. Don’t be afraid to ask!

Others focus on childcare rather than the adult retreat aspect. Lighthouse Family Retreat, for example, is a non-profit organization that serves family living with childhood cancer. They provide a retreat weekend for the entire family so that, for at least a little bit of time, they can enjoy their time together is a safe space away from hospitals.

Affordable Family Vacations

Vacation unto itself can be expensive and family vacations can be downright absurd in cost. Luckily, many retreat centers offer packages and group pricing so that you can bring everyone on your next vacation. Ask for discounts, group rates, or promotions before booking.

Mindfulness Retreats for Families

Mindfulness increases cognitive functioning and happiness. It decreases anxiety and scattered thinking. For obvious reasons, mindfulness retreats are starting to include the whole family. Yoga and mindfulness benefits children just as well as adults. It helps us develop a mind-body connection, improve our self-regulation skills, and use deep breathing ass a coping mechanism. Practicing mindfulness with your children will improve the health and well-being of the entire family. Ask the retreat owners if they offer mindfulness courses for all ages and then bring the whole family!

Yoga For Kids

Yoga is an incredibly powerful tool to help you develop mind-body connection. Body awareness allows you to freely experience this life without getting caught up in all of its stressors (at least not so much). Basically, it is life-changing. Now imagine if you provide those tools to young people, children, babies even. Imagine growing up with that kind of body awareness as a child. Imagine knowing deep breathing exercises for when things get scary, sad, or difficult. Yoga can teach them self-regulation skills and introduce them to a moving meditation practice. We experience the benefits of yoga (reduced stress, relaxation, body strength, and emotional balance) as adults so who is to say that children don't need to be practicing yoga as well? Family yoga classes can help you introduce your little ones to yoga, what it's like to listen to the instructions of the yoga teacher, how to recognize the yoga postures, and stay on the yoga mat (depending on the age of your child). If you feel that your kids are ready, then you can put them in all kids yoga classes at your local studio before taking them on a yoga family holiday. Children's yoga classes are especially great because they design an entire flow with yoga poses for kids, so you know that your child will be able to what the yoga teacher instructs. Yoga for children can help young people get on the right track for a lifetime of health and well-being.

Christian Family Camps

For families looking for the opportunity to improve their relationships with each other and with Jesus Christ, there are tons of Christian family centers that you can choose from. These types of retreats often offer something for each family member so that they can each focus on improving their relationships with the Lord. Many offer Christian marriage or couples counseling, team building exercises, bible study, and family style meals. America Keswick is an excellent example of one of these retreat centers that spreads God's grace through wholesome activities.

YMCA Camps

YMCA offers so many incredible family-based programs, including family camps. A super popular camp that hosts thousands of families each year is Camp Chingachgook in New York. The reason that they are so popular is that they offer a wide variety of planned activities, including hiking, bow and arrow, soccer, football, arts, and crafts. There are bonfires in the summer and winter sports in the winter. They teach kids new skills and activities that involve lots of physical activity, which is pretty crucial for growing kids. Honestly, even if you don't have any children it seems like it would be a fun weekend retreat ;)
